Recommended Product Care
While our products are built to last, it's always best to help prevent product depreciation. We have provided additional products and preservation methods that can further extend the life of your wood products.
Mineral Oil Finish
The wood for your top has been carefully selected from the finest grades of kiln-dried lumber available. After the top has been produced to fit your particular needs for size, shape, and species; we then apply a natural mineral oil finish. This allows the wood to breathe, which is important for lasting beauty and durability. It is very important to continue this process. Heavy applications of mineral oil twice a month for the first three months, then once a month afterwards will maintain you wood top. This mineral oil can be purchased at drug stores and stores like Wal-Mart. It is food grade pure and is safe for food contact. This wood top is a piece of fine furniture and can be easily maintained for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Your top has been designed to be used as a working surface. Scratches or burns from hot pots, etc., can easily be removed by sanding with a fine grit sandpaper, (220 grit is perfect) and a buffing pad. Sand with the grain of the wood and apply mineral oil afterwards. After many years of use if your top shows more than honest wear you can sand the entire top, buff, apply more mineral oil and have a new finish on your top.
Normal clean up can be done with a solution of warm water and mild soap. Rinse lightly with clear water and dry any excess. Apply a light coat of mineral oil and your top is as good as new. You may apply a small amount of lemon juice to deodorize the work surface if necessary. Recent studies have shown that unhealthy bacteria survive on plastic cutting boards but die quickly on wooden ones. Wood contains natural enzymes that kill bacteria.
Catalyzed Conversion Varnish
The wood for your top has been carefully selected from the finest grades of kiln dried lumber available. After the top has been produced to fit your particular needs for size, shape, and species, we apply a Catalyzed Conversion Varnish.
Catalyzed Conversion Varnish is used to protect many wood products such as cabinets and typical furniture pieces. This product is a two step procedure and quickly dries making your countertop resemble the characteristics of a fine piece of furniture.
Normal clean up can be done with a solution of warm water and mild soap. As with any furniture piece, repeated moisture can hamper the appearance of your piece. Clean spills as soon as possible. Typical cleaning with a clean soft cloth will usually provide adequate maintenance.
After years of use, if your top shows typical wear, you can sand the entire top, refinish, and have a “renewed” wood countertop.
As with any special finish (Conversion Varnish, Waterlox®, Polyurethane, etc…). We recommend you allow 30 days before placing any permanent fixtures on the top surface such as small appliances or flower arrangements.
